Biography

Ilir Bakiu was born in Tirana and he began studying the cello at the age of 6.
From 1973 to 1985 he attended the Artistic School "Jordan Misja" in Tirana and graduated with honors. In 1978 he won the 1st prize in the Competition for Young Performers in Tirana. In 1985 he won the first place in the competition to enter to the Academy of Arts in Tirana and for four years of the course he was the first cello. In 1988 he performed as a soloist in the Variations "Rococo" by P.J.Tchaikovsky. In 1989, he performed the Concerto in A minor R. Schumann at the “National Theatre of Opera and Ballet” in Tirana. In the same year 1989 he has performed with the Orchestra of Radio Tirana's Concerto Dvorak broadcast on national television for the final concert of the diploma, which was awarded with honors,. In 1990 he was appointed Professor of Cello at the Artistic School "Jordan Misja" in Tirana.
From 1986 to 1995 he was a member of the quartet "Alban" performing in many concerts in various European countries (Denmark, Italy, France, Slovenia). In 1992 he performed again with the quartet "Alban", a concert at the Vatican in the presence of His Holiness John Paul II. In 1994 he was invited by the Academy of Angers (France), which is an honorary member, to take a course in chamber music, with students of the Conservatory. That same year, in October, he won with the quartet "Alban" the first prize in the Contemporary Music, held in Tirana. With the Quartet Alban recorded for Radio Tirana.
From 1993 until 1995 he was the Assistant Principal Cello in Orchestra “National Theatre of Opera and Ballet” in Tirana.
Since 1995, he moved to Italy as a concert artist, performing in various concerts.
In 1996 and 1997 he attended courses held by the interpretation of Baroque Music Maestro Jaap Schroeder, with whom he performed in several concerts later. In July 1999 he took a course with Tamas Varga, the first cello of the Vienna Philarmonicher.
He has worked on several occasions with the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Orchestra Sinfonica di Savona, Orchestra Stabile di Como, as a first cello with the agency in July Musicale Trapanese, the Philharmonic Salernitana, New Scarlatti Orchestra, Orchestra Regional Bell, Orchestra Sinfonica "Umberto Giordano" in the Province of Foggia and Orchestra del Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella in Naples.
In 2001 he performed on tour to France and Spain as the 1st Cello, in the operas "Il Trovatore", "Nabucco", "Rigoletto", "Don Carlos", "La Traviata".
Currently he serves as the Assistant Principal Cello of the Orchestra della Fondazione "Arena di Verona".
